Susan’s Song

From the moment I was aware
I heard your heartbeat.
Its steady rhythm soothing and strong.
Wrapped in the warmth of your love and protection –
Always knowing you surrounded me.
Then, one day I saw your face,
Your eyes looking into mine.
A miracle! My Mother.
Your arms around me soft and sure.
A beautiful face, reflecting your love.
Today, your heart is still,
But the sound of its cadence plays in my memory.
The wonder of the life you gave me
Is as alive as when I first understood who you are.
I cannot see you today,
But I still feel you.
Nothing will separate us –
Mother and Daughter.
