Trusting

Ok, ok – I admit it, I like to have understanding of what is happening when. How will things play out? What is next? Are things in order? Sometimes I want things to be known immediately. Alright, almost always I want to know things immediately.

A friend of mine says I’m a “ready, fire, aim” person in some things. I suppose he is right.

Today, however, as I sit in the cool of my living room (thank heaven for air conditioning!), I realize that this whole trusting business with God is important. I was reading a post by Chris Tiegreen today, and this caught my eye. The topic is about God’s love, to give you connotation.

“Isn’t it much easier to assure someone else of God’s love than it is to believe it yourself? Isn’t there some lingering question, some doubt deep in the heart, that urges you to see God’s love as part of his job description—an obligation he must fulfill because of who he is but not a passion that delights him. In other words, we can easily believe God loves us because he has to but not so easily believe that he loves us because he wants to.”

Nailed it! When I look at others, it’s very easy for me to believe for them. Somehow, when things are choppy in my own world, doubts creep in. This post (and so many others he writes) feel like Chris has been rummaging around in my brain or heart.

I really needed to read this today, and I’m grateful it showed up in my inbox.

Today, my focus is going to be on trusting the Trustworthy One. When a person is a “control freak”, it’s easy to grasp the reins tightly. All that does is raise one’s blood pressure, increase anxiety and give blisters. And, as I recall from my horseback riding days, the horse doesn’t care for it too much, either. It’s better to relax.

For starters today, I’m going to intentionally lean back. I don’t have all the answers, but I know who does.
