    Cast Away

They were old fashioned wooden crates, rough and bulky with plenty of splinters. One had to be careful handling them. Each one had the contents within stenciled on the outside in glossy black paint. Shouting, all in capital letters, there was WORK, DOG, COUNTRY, FINANCES, FRIEND’S HEALTH, and the catch-all of EVERYTHING ELSE. As the days passed, the pile of crates grew, rather than diminish. Eventually, it was painfully obvious that toting around this much required a monumental effort. Something must be done. Staring at the ceiling during another sleepless night, the answer came in a gentle, loving whisper from the hidden places in her heart. “…Casting all your anxieties…

    Trusting

Ok, ok – I admit it, I like to have understanding of what is happening when. How will things play out? What is next? Are things in order? Sometimes I want things to be known immediately. Alright, almost always I want to know things immediately. A friend of mine says I’m a “ready, fire, aim” person in some things. I suppose he is right. Today, however, as I sit in the cool of my living room (thank heaven for air conditioning!), I realize that this whole trusting business with God is important. I was reading a post by Chris Tiegreen today, and this caught my eye. The topic is about…

    The Stillness of Holy Saturday

I wonder what they were doing that Saturday? Were some huddled in a room somewhere terrified they would be next? Were they exhausted? Did they jump at every and any unexpected sound? From Biblical accounts, it seems this may have been the case. Were they hopeless? We tend to look at these heroes of the New Testament – the Disciples, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Mary who had been set free from her past and others as larger than life. We view them from the resurrection side of history. We know how this one ends – they didn’t. Saul (who would become Paul) was likely celebrating Passover in the strict…

    Imagine the Light

There was an enormous space. So large, in fact, that it is truly impossible for the human mind to comprehend. Its vastness is even difficult for scientists and mathematicians to create formulas to express it. Instead, we have given it a reasonable sounding name: the Universe. What if this enormous “bubble” of visible and invisible matter was not the only thing present? What if, hovering outside of it all, and keeping things in order there is an Entity – a Being – the Very One Who Created It? Again, we have given this a name: God, Elohim. The eternal, unending, beyond time, space and matter God. Unfathomable. Perfect. Holy. What…

    Shepherd and the Shadow

When I was a little girl, in addition to what everyone normally called me, occasionally my mom would call me “Shadow“, because I would follow my dad so closely. Shadow. I like the image that connotates…and, it reminds me of this… One of my dearest friends and I were having a conversation one day. We were discussing the painting of Jesus carrying a lamb around his neck. This painting has hidden depth, because lore has it that if a lamb is wayward and goes rogue, a diligent shepherd will break the lamb’s leg. While this sounds cruel, and PETA would have a meltdown at this, it is truly for the…

    Lift Your Voice

One day during the extreme lock-down – it was as if fear was a tangible thing…a slimy, force that was breathing sulfur all around. My neighborhood was quiet – too quiet. There were no jets flying into DFW. It was as though the world ground to a halt. It was as if paralysis had set in. It was hideous. I had bought a guitar recently…a pretty Martin acoustic that replicated a dearly loved one that I had gotten on my 11th birthday from my parents. It became a sword, a shield and a flame thrower. When I think of it now – it was almost like taking 5 smooth stones…
